Improving and Maintaining Quality of Life
The Mobility Physio aims to maintain or regain function, by improving strength and challenging balance. Practising functional tasks and mobility means that you gain the specific muscles, strength and skills required to undertake them. Whether it is getting in and out of bed or a chair or walking to the shop. Practising these tasks can improve quality of life by increasing independence. Whether you (or your relative/friend) are at home or at a residential or nursing home, physiotherapy may help increase function and improve quality of life. You may just want to be able to get out of bed, improve your balance to decrease your risk of falls or you may have been unwell and your function is not as good as it was previously. There is no need to settle for what you feel might be inevitable loss in ability that comes with getting older. The Mobility Physio can help give you an exercise program to strengthen muscles and increase range of movement and improve your balance.
Rehabilitation
After a fall, operation, injury or illness, mobility and independence can be left somewhat reduced. Physiotherapy may help restore you to your previous level of function. With hard work and some practice you could build up strength and tolerance to more exercise you could reach your functional goals. Whether it is getting out of bed or walking to the shops, its worth trying to see if with time you can regain some of the function you may have lost.
Preventing Falls
Experts believe that the majority of falls could be prevented by some simple changes to a person’s home environment, basic education and exercises. Physiotherapy intervention can help by strengthening muscles, improving balance, educating about prevention of falls and giving advice on how to cope if a fall does occur. Group and individualised exercise programs have been shown to be effective at reducing falls by up to 32%. The mobility physio (Nadia) is a strong believer in prevention rather than cure and this is definitely a good way to prevent falls
Dementia Care
Physiotherapy plays an essential role in promoting and maintaining mobility for people with dementia. Physiotherapists can assess a patient and give ongoing personalised care plans, addressing each individual’s needs. Working with carers, within a care home setting or within a patient’s own home can also alleviate the burden on care givers by promoting independence and educating them on how best to help their client, relative or friend.
Falls account for 14% of all admissions to hospital with patients with dementia and length of stay in hospital is often doubled due to a dementia diagnosis. Poor balance, leading to falls, can be reduced and prevented by physiotherapy-led exercise.
Groups and Classes
Residential or nursing homes often benefit from providing a regular group class of specific exercises to maintain strength and function of their clients. Classes can be adapted for patients with less mobility and then increased in difficulty if they become very good. The mobility Physio can provide group classes for any group of people so even if it is a group of friends in one persons house then it is a good excuse to do some exercise followed by a cup of tea! I am happy to discuss the individual requirements for each nursing or residential home.
